Why Do "(overflow)" Products Appear in My Product List?

When a customer builds and orders a single-SKU bundle from your store, Bundable creates a unique product variant in Shopify to represent that specific bundle combination. These variants are stored on a "base product" in your Shopify admin.

What is an (overflow) product?

An "(overflow)" product is an additional base product that Bundable creates automatically when it can't add new variants to the original base product. This happens for two reasons:

  1. The base product hit Shopify's 2,000 variant limit. When your bundle is popular and accumulates 2,000 order variants, there's no room for more.
  2. The base product was set to Draft or Archived. If you (or someone on your team) changed the base product's status to Draft or Archived in Shopify, Bundable can't add variants to it. It will skip over it and create a new "(overflow)" product instead.

Important: Always keep your bundle's base product set to Active in Shopify. Setting it to Draft or Archived will cause unnecessary overflow products to be created, which clutters your product catalog. If you're seeing overflow products unexpectedly and your bundle hasn't had thousands of orders, this is most likely the cause — set the base product back to Active to stop it.

How it works

  1. A customer builds their bundle and clicks "Add to Cart."
  2. Bundable looks for an Active base product with room for another variant.
  3. If all base products are full, in Draft, or Archived, Bundable creates a new product with "(overflow)" in the name.
  4. The new variant is added to the overflow product. The customer experience is unaffected.

Recommended: Switch to Multi-SKU mode

If you're seeing overflow products, we strongly recommend switching your bundle to Multi-SKU mode. Multi-SKU bundles work fundamentally differently — instead of creating a single combined variant, they add each selected product directly to the customer's cart as individual line items.

Benefits of Multi-SKU bundles:

  • No overflow products — Multi-SKU bundles don't create any extra products in your Shopify admin.
  • Better inventory tracking — each product's inventory is tracked individually, giving you accurate stock counts.
  • Simpler fulfillment — warehouse staff see each item separately in the order, making picking and packing easier.
  • No variant limits — since no bundle variants are created, you'll never hit Shopify's 2,000 variant cap.
  • Cleaner product catalog — no hidden base products or overflow products cluttering your admin.

To switch a bundle to Multi-SKU mode, edit the bundle in the Bundable app and change the Bundle Mode setting from "Single-SKU" to "Multi-SKU". Note that this will change how the bundle appears in orders (individual line items vs. one combined item), so review your fulfillment workflow before switching.

If you need to stay on Single-SKU

If Single-SKU mode is required for your use case (e.g., you need bundles to appear as a single line item in orders), overflow products are harmless and expected. Here's what to know:

  • Do not delete overflow products. They contain active bundle variants linked to customer orders.
  • Keep your base product Active — if the overflow was caused by a Draft/Archived base product, set it back to Active immediately to prevent more overflow products.
  • Overflow products are tagged with bundable so you can filter them in your product list.
  • They are not visible on your storefront unless you manually add them to a collection.
  • They do not count toward any Shopify plan limits.
